Background of the Study
Consanguineous marriages, defined as unions between individuals who are closely related, have profound implications on the prevalence of hereditary diseases. In Oredo, where such marital practices are culturally embedded, there is growing concern about the increased risk of genetic disorders (Eze, 2023). Historical, social, and economic factors have contributed to the persistence of consanguinity, warranting detailed genetic studies. The research intends to examine how these unions affect the incidence of hereditary diseases, employing molecular genetic tools and epidemiological data to assess risk factors (Uche, 2024). By analyzing local pedigrees and comparing them with non-consanguineous populations, the study seeks to elucidate the genetic consequences of inbreeding. This investigation is critical as it may reveal patterns of disease inheritance and offer insights into preventive measures. Integrating local cultural practices with advanced genetic research, the study highlights the importance of awareness and health education in mitigating risks (Nwankwo, 2025). Such interdisciplinary approaches are essential for addressing public health challenges in regions where consanguineous marriages remain prevalent.
Statement of the Problem
The high rate of consanguineous marriages in Oredo Local Government Area has raised concerns about an increased incidence of hereditary diseases. There is limited empirical data linking consanguinity with specific genetic disorders in this region, leaving health professionals without tailored intervention strategies (Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to fill the gap by providing concrete genetic and epidemiological evidence to inform public health policies and awareness campaigns (Akinyemi, 2024).

The study is limited to investigating hereditary diseases associated with consanguineous marriages in Oredo Local Government Area only.
